About:

The Gallery was founded in 1971 by one Sue Davis OBE. The purpose of the Gallery was to exhibit photographs, this was the first of its kind in the world. Sue Davis, who was interested in photography, sees the need for this one of a kind initiative. Davis see that something was needed for people who are interested in photography, could come and look at displays of other people work: the gallery wasn’t only displaying work of professionals but also from amutuers as well. Davis’s idea by now has grown into an educational tool where people can look at history, cultural among other artefacts.

Through its popularity, the gallery is now growing out its space which has now forced its governing body to seek more room. In 1980 the gallery acquired some extra space, which has allowed them to do more exhibits, a cafe and bookshop. They’ve also added a print sales room which was for promoting the work of local and international photographers.

Over thirty years later, the gallery has been relocated to a new premises and which is still now its current location through its popularity. From the inception of the gallery at No.8 Newport Street, to the present location in the heart of the west End, the gallery has seen a number of transformations.

The Gallery now boast three sections; there is now an area for the sole purpose of education and learning studio, an area for a digital media wall and an eatery. The gallery has seen visitors across the length and breadth of the UK and numerous international visitors.
